D&D® Bikers - Tuesday Challenge

Today on ArtOrder
The D&D® Biker Challenge
Upcoming Challenges
- Challenge #1 - B&W Vampires
- Challenge #2 - Catastrophic dragon

The D&D Biker Challenge
What a fun little challenge. I know that the technical nature of the motorcycles were a challenge to a number of folks, but I think that everyone that gave it a try brought something fun and unique to the experience. As a rider, I loved the wide range of vehicles that joined the fray - from traditional motorcycles, to vintage iron, to wild and fantastic techno marvels. I was really impressed with the fact that David Miles grabbed ahold of the concept of halflings and their waterborne activities (from the Halfling Style guide sneak peek), and came up with a amphibious "motorcycle". Great stuff all around. In case you don't remember the details of the challenge - just follow this link.

The Rewards...
There are no prizes or awards for this challenge at this time, But I'm trying to negotiate a t-shirt deal with a printer I know. If it works out, I will pick one or two illustrations to have made into t-shirts. I'll offer them for sale (for cost) on the site. I'll let you know if the details work out. In the meantime, throw you comments up and let me know which is your favorite and your shirt size!

Upcoming Challenges
Challenge #1
Concept Name: B&W Vampires
Due Date: June 28, 2009, Noon PST
Concept Description: This is it - the very last challenge to join and get the qualified to be considered for entry in the first ever "Best of ArtOrder" book. This one is for all the marbles too...

Here is the challenge:
Most of you will remember the Call for B&W Submissions the other day. Despite the amazing onslaught of submissions I received - I'm greedy, and want more. This time I'm going to tie them into a challenge. TO make things really interesting I'm going to through 2 twists into the challenge.

Twist 1 - I've asked two art directors from some competing games publishing companies to jump in and judge the challenge. As soon as I get confirmation, I will reveal the art directors in question. Think on it - three art directors...three companies...three times the exposure

Twist 2 - I'm going to toss a commission into the mix. I'll put on B&W commission for an upcoming product into the ring, and see who wants to walk away with it. I will name that person, based upon their quality of work and ability to execute the art description to my satisfaction. I've also offered this option to the two other art directors...so keep an eye on these pages and see if they accept the challenge and sweeten the pot even more.

The Art Description:
Illo 001: Gwenth and Garreth
Specifications: 1/3 V - 3” w X 6.75” h

This illo depicts a pair of vampires: Gwenth and Garreth.

Must be B&W - no grayscale. You can use line, hatch, zip tone, stipple any tool or technique - as long as it is strictly BLACK & WHITE.

Gwenth: A female vampire, once a human, who excels at stealth and ambush attacks. She wears leather armor and carries two short swords. She should look both seductive and dangerous, but let’s avoid clothing that’s too revealing or risqué. She has short, dark hair, and is an effective assassin. If we see her partially obscured by shadows, that’s great.

Garreth: A male vampire, once a human, who is more of an up-front bruiser. He wears leather armor, and carries a heavy shield and short sword. He’s standing in front of Gwenth, almost protectively. He has pale, almost white hair, and the scars of several battles. He’s thickly built and muscular, and his mouth is open to reveal his fangs and vampiric nature.

Judging
Five art directors in a blind format.
Kris Aubin - Privateer Press
James Davis - Paizo Publishing
Brian Glass - White Wolf | CCP
Sarah Robinson - Paizo Publishing | Pathfinder
... and of course myself, Jon Schindehette - - Wizards of the Coast | Dungeons & Dragons

Prizes!!
Five times the exposure, and the opportunity to win a B&W commission!
What more can you ask for?

NOTE!! This is the last challenge you can participate in and get qualified to submit your piece for the very first "Best of ArtOrder book"!!

Challenge #2
Concept Name: Catastrophic Dragon
Due Date: July 12, 2009, Noon PST
Concept Description: Let's get back to our roots here - critters! Our very first challenge had to do with development of a critter, and it just seems fitting to have the first challenge for the next "best of ArtOrder" kick off with a critter piece. Not to mention - I love critters!

While critters are cool, let's kick it up a notch. I've received a million requests to make an art challenge based on dragons...well now is your chance. Yesterday, Dragon® magazine rolled out a playtest article so you could test drive a new catastrophic dragon - the Volcanic Dragon. It's a really cool new dragon. Without getting deep into the story and mechanics of the piece (you want that, then subscribe!) - the basic concept of the catastrophic dragon is simple. They are infused with the elemental fury that brings about catastrophic effects in the world. So, a volcanic Dragon is infused with the elemental fury of the volcano. When you look at the concept art created by Richard Whitters, Wizards of the Coast Lead concept artist, you will notice that the "body" of the dragon is just a shell or carapace that holds the elemental fury. It is a fun and cool concept.

The Details
• The catastrophic force that you will be using is "earthquake".
• You can choose how you show that elemental force.
• Create a catastrophic dragon that follows the basic body style shown in the Volcanic Dragon
• Create a unique head profile/silhouette, and other body elements that create a easily identified dragon (from the other catastrophic dragons)

Judging
I'll be judging this one. Clean and simple...

NEW UPDATE!!
We now have a judging panel! Some of my favorite dragon artists, and myself. Here's you new panel:
Todd Lockwood, the king of the D&D dragons
Lars Grant-West, the prince of D&D dragons
Kerem Beyit, the rising star of D&D dragons (is anyone seeing a theme here?)
Richard Whitters, Lead Concept Artist, and the creator of the Volcanic concept art
Jon Schindehette, your favorite D&D Senior Art Director (well, I hope so)

Prize
No official prize at this time. I am consulting with the lawyers about the possibility of having a selected piece being used as concept art if we decide to create an earthquake dragon. More details to come.

Hehe. Good crop this week, but I have to say Chistopher Burdett's is easily my vote.

(Even though I wasn't able to get mine finished in time, I'll write up comments for everyone in a bit.)

I vote for Mike Faille; great design and clean lines. It makes me think of Akira for some reason.

mike faille, thats badass.

got a question for u jon. Im pretty excited about this dragon challenge. Whitter's concept art is real cool, its a neat idea.

sirfrancisdrake said...

ok i didnt ask my question, I was gonna ask for a bit more clarity on how close you want us to keep to the body shape of the volcanic dragon.

Claudio Pozas said...

with Mike Faille here. Love 'em dwarves and goblins!

Hey, Jon, I think you skipped on the Environment result! :))

sirfrancisdrake said...

ok i just couldnt help myself. Will the earthquake dragon be covered in Richter scales? get it? ok im done now.

Claudio Pozas said...

Man, I just noticed! Mike's female dwarf has no pants!

:O

LOL

My vote goes to Mike Faille. Good job everyone.

Christopher Burdett gets my vote.

On a side note, I'm a bit confused as to what the female Dwarf is doing on the back of the bike!

My favorites are Mike Faille and Chris Burdett.

But my final vote goes to chris.. I'm still cleaning the milk from my nose- when I saw his pic, I couldn't help but keep giggling like a schoolgirl.

They're all great. But my choices were short listed to Scott Flanders, Chris Burdett and Mike Faille. In the end, while I'd like to pick all three, I have to go with Scott Flanders entry. Absolute bada&& stuff there, Scott. And the execution is so loose and fresh it just about falls off the page. Or races off in this case :)Well done everyone, though!

eye-shuh said...

Christopher Burdett for sure! So awesome!

Okay, my full comments are up over at the usual place so as not to wall-o-text Mr. Schindehette's blog.

For me, it was between Christopher Burdett and Mike Faille, but I'm going with Chris on this one.

Great designs, great execution.

I vote for Christopher Burdett.

I also liked Liz Clarke's 2 entries, Rafi Andrian Z, and Mike Faille.

Really nice work!

The voting is getting pretty exciting..

It's almost like last year's superbowl.. This is going to be a close one!!

I do have to say everyone did an amazing job..

Kudo's to you Jon for coming up with such a fun theme.. I was at HeroesCon this weekend( and all week prepping for the con).

Otherwise I was really hoping to contribute.

My vote goes to Christopher Burdett. Very funny!

It's so hard to choose; I really like the entries by David Miles, Christopher Burdett, Scott Flanders and Rafi Adrian Z, but in the end I have to vote for Mike Faille.

Now that I see Dana Henderson's tieflings, I gotta swing my vote for her! Awesome work!

Here's my 2 bucks:
1) Chris Burdett, as usual his image is well rendered and polished ,but in that case i choose him for his REALLY FUNNY design and concept
I can't stop laugh!!!
2)Rafi Adrian Z for such awesome palette and "traditional media" feeling
3)Dana Henderson for his painterly style too, even if in that case i prefer his(her)technique rather than his(her) design choices

@ Sirfrancisdrake
• I'd like to retain the idea of a "shell" exterior that allows the elemental energy to be seen.
• I'd like to have 4 legs, and a pair of wings
• It does NOT have to look exactly like the Volcanic Dragon, but should have look like it is part of the same species.
Make sense?

Christopher Burdett said...

I vote for Dana Henderson. Looking good!

Scott Flanders wins for me.. great art and a great name, what's not to like? ;)

I was kind of at a loss as to how to proceed- I didn't just want to draw a motorcycle and put one of the races on it, so I used a tree trunk- I figured it'd be something based of of existing materials, etc, and more "in flavor" for D&D.

Because of that, I want to vote for Dana Henderson (I'd also been considering skull handlebars) or David Miles. David edges it out for me because his "waterbikes" are such a unique concept, I think it should get a lii' recognition.

And holy smoo, there's a dragon contest.

Well...my favorites are Claudio Pozas for the cool B&W starkness. Cool Ad. Very sharp.
Mike Faille for the cool Akira-like look...and the biker babe. Beautiful pic.
Chris Burdett for the details and different-ness of it.

I think for my final choice though I'd have to go with Chris Burdett's Pic. I'm a big fan of the atypical and of course details, and Chris always delivers on that.

While I enjoy many of the pictures, Christopher Burdett's is my favorite...maybe it's the hat.

R. Adrian Z said...

i was vote for Chris Burdett's , his work was so fun !

I like Christopher Burdett's the best!

Kristina Carroll said...

Chris Burdett all the way! Great finish, humor and character!

I vote Christopher Burdett's, its has such character with a good amount of fun detailing.
Also who could resist the fun contrast between the cool biker character with his hat and skull decor, to the little wheels of its bike lol!! Love it! ;)
